If you’ve ever said, “I wish I had booked that photoshoot sooner,” this post is for you.

Timing plays a huge role in how your portraits look, the outfits you choose for your session, and how far in advance you need to plan—especially when you’re booking luxury portrait services or a studio photoshoot in North Carolina.

Whether you’re considering an outdoor shoot or planning to visit a photo studio in Raleigh NC, or Durham, knowing when to schedule makes all the difference.

Best Times of Year to Schedule A Photoshoot in North Carolina

Fall Portrait Sessions in North Carolina (September–November)

November is my personal favorite month to photograph outdoors in North Carolina. I’m convinced there’s no better sunset than a November sunset here! The light is soft, golden, and flattering, and the weather is still incredibly temperate for an outdoor shoot.

Fall is ideal if you want:

  • Outdoor portraits with rich, natural light

  • Earlier sunset time

  • Comfortable temperatures (no sweating through hair and makeup)

  • A timeless, editorial feel

  • Fall fashion and vibrant foliage colors

November sessions are especially popular, so these dates tend to book up quickly.

Summer Studio Portrait Sessions in Durham & Raleigh (June–August)

Summertime months in North Carolina can go either way. The heat can be so stifling, and while our professional hair and makeup services absolutely stand up to the weather, it’s not always the most comfortable experience outdoors.

This is where a photography studio or indoor venue really shines. My studio in Durham allows us to control every variable—lighting, temperature, and timing—so you can relax and conserve your energy.

If you’re shooting during summer, booking a photo studio in Raleigh NC or Durham is usually the best choice.

Winter Portrait Sessions in the Studio (December–February)

December through February is an ideal time to book in the studio. The weather outside is frightful, but that can’t stop us!

A woman in a tan sweater and dark jeans poses confidently against an olive background, smiling with a relaxed, happy expression.

Inside the studio, everything is controlled. Rain or shine, we’ll create consistent, elevated portraits without worrying about cold temperatures, wind, or gloomy skies. Winter is also perfect for legacy sessions, branding portraits, and holiday gift planning.

Spring Outdoor Portrait Sessions (March–May)

Spring is made for outdoor photoshoots. Mid-March through early May brings gorgeous blooms, comfortable weather, and plenty of sunshine.

This is a beautiful season for women who want fresh, light-filled portraits that feel joyful and alive—without the summer heat.

Pro Tips From A Portrait Photographer

If you’re dreaming of photos in a flower field…

Here in North Carolina, flower fields don’t really hit their stride until the first week of May.

While early April might bring a few blooming trees and scattered flowers (like the azaleas at WRAL Gardens), full flower fields aren’t quite ready yet.

Think “April showers bring May flowers!” If you want lush blooms in your portraits, May is your best bet.

If you’re looking for the best natural light...

It’s in April–May and October–November.

The sun sits lower in the sky, giving you that dreamy, golden glow that flatters everyone and creates magazine-worthy portraits. These months are photographer gold!

My expert advice…

Book a photoshoot in the studio for the most seamless experience.

One of the biggest perks is never having to worry about weather rescheduling. Rain, wind, humidity, heatwaves—none of that gets to decide when or how we shoot.

Every detail is controlled inside the studio, so you can walk in feeling confident, pampered, and 100% ready to shine. If you're craving consistency, comfort, and control, the studio is your happy place.

When Should You Book Your Photoshoot in North Carolina?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to the best time of year for a photoshoot in North Carolina—it all comes down to comfort, light, and intention. Spring and fall are ideal for outdoor portraits, while summer and winter shine inside a photography studio where every detail is controlled.

The most important factor isn’t the season, though. It’s planning ahead! The sessions that feel the most relaxed and meaningful are almost always the ones booked with intention, not urgency.

Make sure to give your photographer advance notice, especially if you’re booking during a busy season.

  • For a spring session: Spring is by far my busiest season when high school grads are booking senior photos and portraits! I recommend reaching out in late fall of the year prior to secure a spot.

  • For a summer session: Reach out between February-April.

  • For a fall session: Fall is another busy season for me! Contact me starting in May to grab a spot on my calendar.

  • For a winter session: While winter isn’t as busy, I’m wrapping up final galleries and confined to my editing cave for much of the season. You can reach out as early as August to secure a spot on my winter photoshoot calendar.

If you’re considering a photoshoot in Raleigh, Durham, or Chapel Hill, give yourself time to choose the season that fits your vision and your schedule. The right timing doesn’t just affect how your photos look—it shapes how the entire experience feels!
