How To Convince Your Mom to Take Legacy Portraits (And 5 Powerful Reasons Why You Need To)

Let me guess...you’ve been dreaming of a beautiful, intentional photo session with your mom. The kind where you're both styled to perfection, happy with how you look and feel, laughing together, maybe even crying a little (in a good way!), and creating the type of memories that can only be captured during a joint mother-daughter legacy portraits session. But there's just one problem…

Your mom does NOT want to be in front of the camera.

Sound familiar?

She says she’ll come to support you, but not to be photographed. She’s “not photo-ready,” “just wants to focus on you,” or “hates how she looks in pictures.” I hear it all the time.

But let me tell you something with my whole heart: there is no more important photo than one with your mom in it.

And I learned that the hardest way possible.

My Story: Why Legacy Portraits Mean Everything To Me

In 2024, I lost my mom suddenly to cancer. One moment she was there—vibrant, loving, my biggest cheerleader—and the next, I was holding on to whatever little pieces of her I had left.

Three women dressed in purple and gray smile and pose in front of a dark background. A baby wearing a lace dress is held in front. Mood is joyful.

And do you know what I searched for?

Photos.

Photos of her.

Photos with me.

Quality photos that captured her best and most radiant self.

But like so many women, my mom was usually behind the camera, capturing our lives instead of living fully in them. She didn’t feel "ready" to be in pictures. She just wanted pictures of her grandbabies. She didn’t think she looked good. She thought there would always be more time.

There wasn’t.

That heartbreak shaped the soul of Pink Owl Photography and it’s why I created the Leaving Your Legacy session experience. Because portraits are not just pretty pictures. They’re proof. Of love. Of connection. Of a legacy that deserves to be honored and remembered.

So How Do You Convince Your Mom to Take Legacy Portraits?

You speak to her heart. And you remind her:

Two women in elegant dresses pose closely against a dark backdrop. Both smile gently, their expressions warm and serene.

This is for both of you.
You’re not asking her to be in a fashion shoot (though we can totally glam her up), you’re asking her to make memories with you. This is about your bond. The kind only mothers and daughters understand.

She doesn’t have to “be ready.”
Our studio in Durham, NC offers hands on wardrobe styling, professional hair and makeup, and the most flattering lighting and backdrops imaginable. She won’t have to worry about a thing. We guide you both every step of the way so she feels confident and radiant.

You want these photos more than any gift.
When she knows this isn’t just for the camera—but for your heart—she’ll show up. And she’ll thank you for it later.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Think about it: when was the last time you had professional photos together? Not rushed, not on someone’s iPhone, but beautifully captured and curated. These are the photos that get framed, cherished, and passed down.

Because someday, these images will be all you have.
And they will matter more than you could ever imagine right now. A daughter is her mother’s heart walking around outside her body—and every heartbeat deserves to be remembered.
